Sylvia Wong was awarded a Dragon Boats NSW Honorary Life Membership in recognition of her contribution to dragon boating at all levels. Her prestigous roles throughout dragon boat include: NSW State Coach; Australian National Coach; DBNSW Executive Committee; IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships Organising Committee, NSW Chief Race Official and IDBF Race Official.
Not to mention being our own Head Coach for 2 years, a CYLDB paddler since the early 90's and a CYLDB Committee Member since 2004.
If anyone could be called Superwoman it would be Sylvia - we are sure that 'V' should be sponsoring her. We don't know how you do it!!
Sylvia will very soon be leaving to work in Hong Kong, and will be missed by everyone at CYL and in the dragon boat community.
Simon Wong was awarded the DBNSW Member Of The Year for his contributions to youth dragon boating in NSW and Australia. A few years ago he initiated a drive to create the first NSW Junior Crew, whose women's team became an Australian Junior Womens Crew at the IDBF World Championships in Sydney 2007. Since then he has helped kick off juniors teams such as the Blackwattle Bay Blues and Snowy Mountains Grammar School. He has driven thousands of kilometers and organised numerous boot camps.
As well as contributing at the state and national level, Simon has been a CYLDB Coach, including Head Coach, for numerous years throughout CYLDB history. He has been an integral part of CYL since the 80's, not only in dragon boat but in Lion Dance, Chinese Dance and other youth group activities. Simon has also been a Vice President of the CYL parent organisation.
Congratulations to both of you, we couldn't think of anyone more deserving! We are proud of you both.

Congratulations to everyone who competed at the NSW State Titles, especially to all those for whom it was their first State Titles! Although the Mixed and Women's crews didn't make the A finals, the Mixed achieved a great first heat (placing first) and the Womens gave a lot of new girls (more than half a boat, in fact) their first State Titles experience.
The Opens crew consistently pushed the limits all day, biting at VADB's heels in the first heat and thoroughly smashing a certain naysayer team in the second heat. Even with 2nd placings in the heats we still made the A final, and proved that we earned our spot by putting in a perfect race - the best race of the season in fact. Despite a 4th place we were genuinely in the premier league, placing ahead of teams such as PD's. Quite simply we were beaten on power and strength alone, as every single person truly did their best.
We can definitely be proud of the effort put in at the state titles. If we keep at it and increase our strength and power we will see some placings at next year's!

Now that the hectic Chinese New Year period is over we can stop, take a breath, and pat ourselves on the back for a great effort and a job well done.
The festivities kicked off with traditional dragon dances at Market City and continued with a giant rat parading down George St (bowing irreverently to local establishments such as KFC).
All celebrations were put aside when it came down to business-end of the NSW dragon boat season - the Darling Harbour Chinese New Year Dragon Boat races, the biggest and most public race on the Australian dragon Boat calendar.
Once again CYL has shown its mettle and fighting spirit, placing either first or second in every heat, in all premier categories - and qualifying for the A finals in each category entered.
An impressive performance from the Women's team saw an improvement upon last year's placing, and the Opens and Mixed held out last year's positions despite fierce competition.
CYL's performance was consistent all day, and despite placing at the lower end of each A-final we have put our best in against some 36 teams. Well done, and see you at training for the last two races - Canberra (15th March) and the NSW State Titles (5th-6th April).

On Saturday evening Santa made an early visit to CYL, stopping by to sample some of the finely prepared foods and hand out presents. Judging by the number of people that received gifts, he must have mixed up his naughty/nice list!
The first session of the Introductory and Intermediate paddling courses were underway on Sunday and proved a hit! Followed by the awesome free lunch to undo all that good work.
And lastly but not least, the CYLDB raffle has been drawn and the winners notified. The winning tickets are displayed below.
Thanks go out to all the organisers for the events, especially to Tan Chan who put in endless hours of work organising food and raffle tickets.

CYLDB has shown fighting spirit at this weekend's 200m sprint regatta at Penrith!
After steadily improving all day the Opens crew powered home in a perfectly executed race, moving up from being ranked 5th in the heats to take out 3rd place.
The Womens crew also performed remarkably well, taking out 4th place after a strong consistent effort all day. Well done girls!
Meanwhile the Kirin and Gryphon mixed crews gave all paddlers (new and old) a chance to gel and share the paddling experience amongst all members.
We've had a taste of a finals fever. Now is the time to put the extra work in to shave off those last few seconds - which will make us a serious contender for 1st place at Chinese New Year!

It was a fantastic sunny day for the first race of the season and it turned out to be a great day of racing for the CYL crews! We entered 3 mixed crews, and the Wong boat backed up their trash talking from the past week to win the Mixed B final with the Gryphon team in a close second right behind them.
The Kirin mixed crew paddled well, but were unlucky to not make a final. The womens crew paddled well all day and came home with 3rd in the womens final. Last but not least, the opens crew stormed home to win the Opens final with a fantastic effort in the last race of the day! Well done everyone, hope you all enjoyed our first race of the new season!

Yes! That's right people - we won at the Stanley International Dragon Boat races in Hong Kong! Woohoo! What a huge surprise for us all! Well done everyone! It was a very hot day in Hong Kong, far from the cold temperatures we had been training in back in Sydney's winter, but we kept our heads together and put in some awesome racing to finish number 1 out of 110 mixed crews! We had to fight for it in the final with the other crews right up there with us, but we kicked it home early and pulled out a lead on them all! Well done everyone!
